Frequently Asked Questions About Car Rental Uganda

Car Rental Uganda is much more rewarding when you know everything you need to know. From driving on the left hand side of the road to the road signs, below are some of the top asked questions.

What documents do I need?

You must provide a valid driver’s license (from your home country) and a Passport (for foreigners). This is the first and essential tip you need to mind while you rent a car in Uganda.  These documents confirm that you are licensed and went through training to drive on the road.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

While not strictly mandatory if your home license is in English, an IDP is highly recommended. It makes traffic police checkpoints much smoother.

Is there an age limit?

To rent a car in Uganda, you need to at least be 21 years old with at least 2 years of driving experience.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Uganda?

The cost of renting a car in Uganda varies and this depends on the car, the number of people it accommodates and the time of the year you are renting. Below are the car rental Uganda prices for some of the cars

Toyota RAV4: $45 per day.

Land Cruiser Prado (TX/TZ): $65 per day.

Land Cruiser V8/VX/GX: $80 per day.

What is the fuel policy?

All rental cars will be delivered with a quarter tank and you are requested to return it with the same amount of fuel. As Best Car Rental Uganda, we also recommend refueling at reputable stations like Shell or Total to ensure fuel quality.

Which side of the road do you drive on?

Uganda follows the British system—you drive on the left-hand side and only overtake from the right hand side of the road and when its safe for you to do so.

Do I really need a 4×4 car rental Uganda?

For city driving in Kampala or Entebbe, a 2WD is fine. However, if you are visiting National Parks (like Bwindi, Murchison, Kidepo or even Mgahiga), a 4×4 is essential due to unpaved, often muddy “murram” roads.

What are “Pop-up roofs” and “Rooftop tents”?

Pop-up roof: The roof lifts up so you can stand and take photos during game drives through Savannah national parks

Rooftop tent: A tent mounted on the vehicle’s rack, perfect for travelers who want to camp in the wilderness safely above the ground.

Insurance & Safety

What does insurance cover? All our car rental Uganda vehicles come with Comprehensive Insurance. This usually covers third-party liability, head on collision, and theft.

What is NOT covered? Insurance excludes damage caused by negligence, such as:

Driving under the influence.

Driving off-track in national parks.

Night driving: For your safety, once you rent a car in Uganda, you are advised to make sure by 7:00 PM, you have already got to your next destination or hotel. You can start as early as 6:00am to drive the car.

What happens if I break down?

We have a network of a team in most of the parts of Uganda who are licensed and will give you the service while on your trip. However, should we realize the car needs extra attention, we send a replacement vehicle from Entebbe to where you are so that you proceed with your trip.

Can I drive to Kenya, Rwanda, or Tanzania?
